I disagree with some of the broad swaths you paint about entire cultures or countries...there is, after all, the word "karoshi" for the way Japanese die at work ...
That aside, you make a very fine point. Mental illness is often defined by the society in which it occurs. And mental illnesses tend to reflect the issues of the societies they present in.
We treat mental health problems often as an individual issue, when it is, as the author so rightly points out, an issue of the society as a whole.
